Jute webbing is a strong fabric woven as a flat strip or tube of varying width and fibres, often used in place of rope. It is used in the cable industry and as binding tape for carpets. It is a workhorse material in the world of furniture and upholstery, as it provides a supportive and long-lasting foundation for chairs, sofas, and other upholstered pieces. It holds coil springs within furniture in place. Normally woven like a basket, the webbing is stretched over the coil springs. It is also used on inside and outside sections of furniture to provide backing so that when pressed on, the furniture does not cave in. Once the webbing is applied, a burlap layer is placed over it to close any openings in the webbing weave.
